Use the Color Picker to sample colors from your drawing, including from imported images. You can also use it to pick up the properties of a tool you have already used.

Accessing the Color Picker

There are a few ways to activate the Color Picker:

  • From the Color Wheel: Tap the color circle at the center of your Tool Wheel to open the Colors menu, then tap the eyedropper icon.
  • With a Gesture: Tap+Hold on the canvas to activate Selection, then tap the mode toggle at the bottom of the screen until it shows the Color Picker.
  • With a Shortcut: Set Tap+Hold or your Apple Pencil's double-tap action to Color Picker in the Settings menu under the Gestures tab.

Using the Color Picker

Once active, drag the picker across the canvas. The color under the crosshairs will be applied to your active tool when you lift your finger or stylus.

Pro Tip: The Color Picker can also detect the original tool, size, and opacity of a vector stroke. When you pick from a stroke, a tag will appear. Tap this tag to instantly switch your active tool to those exact settings.

Important: In the Selection menu at the bottom, you can toggle between Alpha On and Alpha Off. Alpha On picks the exact color and opacity of a single stroke. Alpha Off picks the flattened color you see on screen, as in a pixel-based app.
